General Exhaust Information

The primary job of a flex pipe is to allow a flexible joint in the exhaust system to eliminate breaking the exhaust manifold or exhaust system. Flex pipe failure can happen as a result of old age, or weak motor mounts. Weak motor mounts cause excessive flex and wear them out faster.Flex pipes are sold with and without the inner lining. We only sell inner-lined flex pipes as they are stronger, more durable, and do not make whistling sounds.

Exhaust resonators are a round hollow cylinder, with a fiberglass-like material sandwiched between the shell and the core. The resonator is installed in the exhaust system and creates an “exhaust note” that changes the sound of the exhaust system making it more quiet and less of a drone sound. In other words, it interrupts the exhaust flow and combined with the muffler, makes the exhaust tone more smooth and silent. Along with making the exhaust more silent, it helps with engine performance and smoother driving with less fuel consumption. Some vehicles require a resonator, some don’t. Several types of resonators are available on the market.

Muffler sound is very hard to predict due to so many different variables. Pipe size, muffler size, and exhaust configuration to name a few. In other words, you can put the same muffler on 4 different cars and get 4 different tones/sound.

Mufflers come in a wide variety of sizes, shapes, styles, and purposes. We all know what a muffler does, right? I will just touch base on a few points without over-loading the page with a wealth of information, and have a few pictures showing the differences. I will leave the customer to do his/her own research as to exactly what they are looking for.

General, factory O.E.M. style mufflers are quiet, usually a 2 baffle or 3 baffle design.

Flow-through mufflers are the same design/style as a glass-pack/resonator. They offer the same performance in the straight through design, but are in the shape/style of a standard muffler, making this a better choice when it comes to installation. Aluminized vs. stainless: The advantage aluminized has over stainless is cost. Stainless mufflers last a lot longer but cost a lot more also. HEADS-UP: A lot of companies offer stainless mufflers, but ONLY the body is stainless, not the inside components, so research before you purchase.

Chambered mufflers are more designed for street machines, muscle cars, and customers looking for aggressive sound and performance. Different size chambers and the over-all design of the chamber is what dictates the sound. Some manufacturers may use a packing to further alter the sound.

Turbo mufflers generate some mellow rumble, but do not get substantially louder on acceleratpgsion. They direct the exhaust flow through a series of tubes in a S-shaped pattern, similar to a O.E.M. style muffler, but the tubes are less restrictive. Some manufacturers may use a packing to further alter the sound.

Glass-packs resonator mufflers have a straight thru design, with a fiberglass packing allowing no flow interruption at all. Loudest you can get, unless you run no muffler at all.
